Artist Statement

Gia Spiotti is a Romanian-American composer, vocalist, and performance artist. Spurred by her background as a mezzo-soprano, Spiotti feels the pull to create music that utilizes the true expressive power of the human voice and body, often in the form of art song, opera and performance art.

Spiotti loves to collaborate with fellow artists to realize her vision. Recently she has co-produced a musical-short film with film maker Julianna Spiotti, and is a composer collaborator with Untie my Tongue, a Boston based concert series where composers are paired with poets and visual artists. Spiotti holds a degree from The Hartt School, University of Hartford where she studied composition with Gilda Lyons and trained as a mezzo-soprano with Cherie Caluda. She holds a Masters of Music Composition from The Longy School of Music of Bard College where she studied with Alexandra du Bois and Niloufar Nourbakhsh.

Terrible and spiritual and sensual. The body is a total machine for expression. My purpose is to utilize it to my satisfaction in theater-performance art pieces. I believe theater is the ultimate utilization of the body as an expressive weapon. And I believe music puts us in conversation with a secret, vibrational world. Terrible and spiritual and sensual.
